QUEST FOR THE INDENTITY OF THE PLACE
A project combining research, documentary, and artistic activities inspired by history, present day, and architecture of Szczecin, as well as multicultural character of Polish-German borderland.
Szczecin is a city severely tested by history - because of its geographic location, the region for ages was the are of various influences and settlements, including Poles, Danes, Swedes, Germans, and temporarily even French and Russians, as well as Jews. After the WW2 several years passed before the final decision was made accepting Polish administration in Szczecin. It resulted in a specific cultural uprooting of the city with identity based on the sense of provisional state and confrontation with traces of "otherness" present in architecture and history. Even now habitants of Szczeicn experience a painful lack of continuity of tradition - the generation of people for whom Szczecin is the place where they were born has just matured.
Thus we find it even more crucial to get to know this city - to discover its multicultural history and seeking own feeling of identity not by means of negation of the past, but its cognition.
The project "Quest for identity of the place" is intended to show lost and ignored areas of the city's topography and to find people who still bear memory of old events...
