Buriats are the largest ethnic minority group in Siberia, concentrated mainly around the Baikal Lake. This major Mongol group has been playing an important role in the history and culture of the whole region. In the 18th century, after Buryatia was incorporated into Russia, the Tibetan branch of Buddhism (one of the official religions in Russia) became an important factor in the cultural development of Buryatia. Nowadays a revival of Buddhism is taking place as an important factor in the national consolidation and spiritual rebirth.
Veronika Belyaeva Ph. D. is a lecturer of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at University of Szczecin. Traveler and researcher, she spent several years performing the field studies among the tribes of Buriats and Kalmukhs. Her interest focuses on traditional religions of Russia, with their contemporary transformations, revivals and adjustments to a post-Soviet socio-political reality.
