AROUND TRADITION 2009. Customs of Christmas
Christmas-time is one of the most important periods in the polish folk-tradition. But during the last decades those since centuries preserved traditions are more and more reduced and modified. The december meeting of AROUND TRADITION 2009 will try to focuss on those christmas traditions and customs, which are forgotten, vanishing or working only in certain closed comunities. To the december edition we invited Anna and Witold Broda - two musicians, experts and researchers of the polish folk traditions. They cofounded the "Teatr Wegajty" and the group "Bractwo Ubogich", founded the "Kapela Brodow", are award winners a.o. of the "Folk Phonogram of the Year" and the Festival "Nowa Tradycja".
About themselves they say: We love polish traditional music, together we are playing since 1992. We play mostly spirituals and folksongs from the period of the First Republic. Our concerts are like a guideline in the calendar of the polish feasts and festivities.
To not loose the respect for those ancient songs and partitueres, we try to keep the original way of performing them as well as - in case of religious songs - their specific context. We do not forget that music lives from the performers individuality - thus we do not simply quote, but tell those same century-old stories.
In the Kana Theatre the "Kapela Brodow" will lead a three day long workshop on polish ancient almost forgotten christmas carrols, which dramatically differ from contemporary christmas songs in means of content, melody or the way of performance itself. In addition, during the meetings there will be told about the customs and traditions of carrol singing. The workshop will end with a concert of the "Kapela Brodow" and a workshop presentation.
