"Around tradition 2009" Project. Traditions of Great Lent.
Led by: Schola of Węgajty Theatre.
Tradition of Great Lent, a period preceding the most important feast of the Catholic Church, goes down to the fourth century. A special character of that time is expressed, among others, in a variety of music forms developing since the Middle Ages. We can find various aspects of the Passion of Christ as a subject in liturgical as well as non-liturgical song in the universal Latin repertoire of the Catholic Church, and, on the other hand, in numerous vernacular songs of various language and cultural traditions, expressing the subject in a specific local form. Creators of Schola of Wegajty Theatre, Johann Wolfgang Niklaus, Jacek Hałas, Maciej Kaziński and Serhiy Petrychenko focus on reconstruction of medieval liturgical dramas, musical-theatrical presentations, researches on tradition of liturgical and sacred songs and anthropology of culture. Within the framework of the Project "Around Tradition" they will lead three-day workshops on medieval Latin, Polish and Ukrainian songs played on wheel fiddle and songs performed till today during Great Lent, passion plays and Easter celebrations in Kurpie region and near Bilgoraj and Szypliszki. The result of project will be presentation of Lenten songs performed by Schola of Wegajty Theatre. The project is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, within the "Cultural Heritage" program.
